Forgive me for linking to Perez Hilton again, but this is quite possibly the cutest thing I have EVER seen. Gin is an adorable border collie who dances with her equally adorable 16 year old British owner, Kate. They took Britain’s Got Talent by storm, and I hope they win! I miss my dogs…

The Writers Guild of America has asked it’s members to ratify the new contract deal and END THE STRIKE. After three months of “Deal or No Deal” (which I was starting to like) the light at the end of the tunnel is visible. “The Office”, “Scrubs”, and possibly a full 16 episode season of “Lost” (as opposed to the 8 episode heart attack version we were supposed to receive this spring) are in our nearish future.

The news of the strike ending has conjured the question of how we pop-culture enthusiasts survived the decay of thoughtful television and the rise of “people doing stupid shit fo’ real” (see the new American Gladiators). I have personally been watching a preponderance of material “on the online”, such as full seasons of “Curb your Enthusiasm”, “Lost” and various other shows that I have longed after for some time now. Others may have lost themselves into the abyss of “Celebreality” that Video Hits One can crank out even faster without writers. Being reeled in by the question of which gross-ass ninja-turtle-ass fake-ass “hussy” has never been my cup of tea (I’m lying, how can I quote Chance from “I Love New York” without watching it, damn), but it is understandable why we would subject ourselves to this in times of famine.

Often times we get caught up in the outrageous noise of conventional living and fail to recognize the real messages that surround us. Yes, there are the blaring ones of commercialism, but there are also some of truth and responsibilty. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to go to the Democratic Debates in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, sponsored by the South Carolina Legislative Caucus. While there were rampant messages of partisan politics, it was those voices that had something more to say than mere praises in support of one candidate or another that touched my spirit. I realized how truly tuned out I was becoming.

I traveled to Myrtle Beach with a broad coalition of student leaders dedicated to propelling the message of a clean energy future to political leaders through their grassroots efforts. Many of these students don’t receive any type of monetary compensation for their work, but you wouldn’t know this by their displays of dedication to the cause. The students made conference calls the entire drive en route to Myrtle Beach, honing their talking points and presentation. When we arrived they hit the ground running with media advisories, signs, petitions, polar bear suits, and an energy which cannot wholly be explained. Continue reading »

NBC didn’t back down, and neither did the writer’s guild, so there will be no glitzy televised ceremony this year. The Screen Actors Guild promised the Writer’s Guild that its famous actor members won’t cross the picket line, so no stars would show up even if they had a normal Golden Globes ceremony this year.

Instead, they’ll just show a press conference.

“We are all very disappointed that our traditional awards ceremony will not take place this year and that millions of viewers worldwide will be deprived of seeing many of their favorite stars,” said Jorge Camara, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press.

Apparently, the Hollywood Foreign Press will lose millions from this deal, mainly because they usually make millions from selling tables and broadcast rights. There won’t be tables because there’s no people to sit in them. The Hollywood Foreign Press usually use the money to fund film education initiatives, but I guess this year the uneducated film viewers will remain uneducated.

With their writers still striking, late night hosts returned last night. Apparently Letterman and Conan were busy in their time off having beard growing contests. Conan called his a “strike beard.”

Colin suggested he would stop cutting his toenails until global warming was solved. Good luck walking, buddy.

Hopefully the writer’s strike will end soon, and these two can go back to their normal facial hairless selves.

A Shot At Love

Many of us here have something important in common: Despite being huge elitists (myself included) in many realms, we just can’t get enough bad TV. How will MTV/VH1 outdo themselves next time? The answer is: “A Shot At Love with Tila Tequila.” There are those who are diehard “I Love New York” fans, and while I love seeing our old friend New York ceremonially spit out her suitors’ culinary attempts into a pail as much as the next person, I just can’t stop watching Tila. An unprecedented bisexual pool of contestants. A star who really isn’t famous for anything. (Though Time says she is “some combination of rapper, singer, model, blogger and actress,” and common knowledge of the Internets says she has the most Myspace friends – not an easy task.) Rumors that Tila isn’t even bisexual. And of course the usual reality TV (awesome) characteristics of catfights, sex, and the absurdity of “dating” on TV itself… PERFECTION.

I also can’t wait for the inevitable spinoffs of this show – a chance for the rejects to find their own true love. I’m pulling for Dani, originally a dark horse and outsider as the only non-”lipstick” lesbian, who has emerged from the masses and is now in the final two! When it comes down to it, no one really cares if it’s real. “Reality TV” is merely a nominal label that really means TV that I will enjoy. I’ll still keep watching the Hills (despite the well-circulated article of its lack of reality) because the producers and editors are such geniuses at their craft – creating a hilarious story that makes us feel better about our own intelligence, sanity, and lives in general. Don’t miss the series finale of Tila Tequila, when she finally finds her true soul mate! Tuesday night (Dec. 18) at 10:00 Eastern on MTV. And stay tuned to see how reality TV tops itself again – your work is cut out for you, Viacom.

KITT

NBC is bringing Nightrider back, for some reason. Along with American Gladiators, and Bionic Woman, apparently the whole network lineup will be filled with remakes of successful ’80s TV shows. Hooray for original ideas. Check out more KITT photos here.
