I am a sucker for 1950s kitschy futurism. Especially the futuristic way of life that Disney promoted with Tomorrowland, Epcot, and the like. Here’s an excerpt from a 1958 Disney show titled “Magic Highway U.S.A.”

It’s interesting to note the things that actually came to pass: rearview cameras, GPS systems, and unchecked suburban sprawl.

I for one think we could use some of those sun-powered-electro-suspension cars and the flying ambulance/fire truck/wrecker.

PC World just posted their top 15 technology disappointments of 2007. Not surprisingly, sitting alone at the top of the shameful list was  Microsoft’s Vista. Remember the excitement when XP came out? I’m a huge nerd, and I still only know a handful of people that have upgraded. Yeah, lots of people aren’t bothering with the big V, or they’re switching to Mac OS X, or they’re, uh, downgrading back to XP after blowing their money on Vista.

Check out the rest of the list here.

Wow. They are really taking this DNA thing to a new (very commercial) level.

Would you pay $2,000 to find your soul mate?

If you can cough up the cash, a Florida matchmaking company claims perfect chemistry lies in a swab of your spit.

The new DNA dating service, ScientificMatch.com, promises that its pricey, patent-pending technology “uses your DNA to find others with a natural odor you’ll love, with whom you’d have healthier children, a more satisfying sex life and more.” Read more…

KITT

NBC is bringing Nightrider back, for some reason. Along with American Gladiators, and Bionic Woman, apparently the whole network lineup will be filled with remakes of successful ’80s TV shows. Hooray for original ideas. Check out more KITT photos here.

According to a Merriam-Webster Word of the Year poll, undoubtedly voted on by internet nerds, “w00t” is the best word to use to sum up the soon-ending year 2007. Great choice.

I’ll admit it is pretty hard to come up with a single word to describe an entire year, but if I was in charge, I’d pick a phrase to sum up ’07: “We realized we’re killing the planet.”

Another problem with w00t is that it’s really outdated, I can’t remember the last time I even typed w00t, let alone said it. The only person I can remember uttering the occasional w00t was a dude I went to school with in freakin’ 2001. Maybe w00t should have been the word of the year for 2001… but I guess they chose terrorism for that year instead.

Anyways, I bet Woot.com is thrilled about all the free publicity over the story. Check out the whole AP story after the jump. Or just read it on Yahoo!

You may not have heard of the wildly successful, company-saving Nintendo Wii, if you don’t pay attention to technology, or have been hanging out in Antarctica or something.

Anyways, the video below is a Chinese knockoff of the Wii called the Vii, of all things. The video is appropriately subtitled using what Chinese sounds like in English.

3d-madness

The guys over at the USC Institute for Creative Technologies recently showed off this amazing spinning mirror that can display 3D rendered images and video in 360 degrees of space. It’s basically a new nerdy thing that will make star wars/video game fans shoot a load. It would be cool if there was some way to play around with it, only problem is that the mirror would slice your hand off while it spins at ridiculously high speeds. It’s also hilarious that the guys who invent this thing choose a Tie Fighter as one of the first things to throw into an expensive 3d mirror. I mean…they must get all the ladies…

Videogame companies Activision and Vivendi, who owns Blizzard, are merging. The New York Times has a pretty interesting article about the expansion of video games from caffeine-driven teenage-boy wonderland into some thing that everyone can enjoy.

The Wii, World of Warcraft, and Guitar Hero have all made games open to everyone. I personally think WoW is about the nerdiest game around, but it has over 9 million subscribers! That’s more than double the population of South Carolina.

For my first of what will hopefully be many posts, I come bearing gifts! Well, I come bearing videolemon.com, which is what has held my world together since the fall of tv-links.Videolemon isn’t itself a link site, but a search engine for link sites. So if there is some show that you have to see, videolemon can usually find it somewhere, but not always (one day Twin Peaks…..one day…)
