He apparently had a great time, was at the mall by 4am, stayed up for 20 hours straight, jogged in place a lot, went to a ball, was inspired, etc.

Sounds good to me, I was stuck with CBS’ HD feed, CNN, and ABC online…

Check out his whole experience here.

Luckiest Man Alive?

This is sort of the stuff out of nightmares. What happens if you are on a window washer platform, 47 stories above the ground, and the lift fails? If you aren’t a super hero, you fall 500 feet, and most likely turn into a human piñata. This scenario really happened to a poor fellow named Alcides Moreno, and, against all odds, he survived. Sadly, his brother died in the fall, discrediting the theory that falling 500 feet to the ground is a non-lethal activity.

According to the New York Times,

“He was given roughly 24 pints of blood and 19 pints of plasma and underwent an operation to open his abdomen in the emergency room because, his doctor said, they did not want to risk moving him to an operating room. As December went on, he endured nine orthopedic operations.”

Not only did he survive, apparently he’s going to (hopefully) walk again. He started talking, and even rubbed his wife’s face, after mistakingly giving some love to one of his nurses.

He might want to get a different job though. Hooray for modern medicine.  Check out the full article here.

And we thought they weren’t working. Just minutes ago, the House of Representatives passed a landmark bill that takes a few steps toward promoting clean, renewable energy.

The House Energy Bill contained several important provisions. Chief among them, however, were the renewable energy standard, which requires utilities to provide 15% of their electricity from clean, renewable sources by 2020, and an increase in CAFE (fuel economy) standards to 35 mpg. This is the first increase in fuel economy standards in my lifetime!

To see how your Representative voted, click here.

A strong energy bill is an important first step in helping us to reduce carbon dioxide emissions 80% by 2050, which is what scientists say we need to do to avert the worst of global warming.  This bill is expected to save us all money at the pump (by increasing fuel economy) and creating new jobs by promoting the development of clean, renewable electricity sources.

Up next: the Senate will vote on this bill in a few weeks. Then (if it passes the Senate), on to the President, who will definitely veto the bill. Isn’t politics fun, ya’ll?

Marriage saves lives?

This is probably just another example of “the man” telling us to get married…

JACKSON, Miss. – Donnie Register has a new reason to be thankful he’s married — police say his wedding band deflected a bullet and probably saved his life.

Two men walked into Register’s shop at The Antique Market on Saturday and asked to see a coin collection, police Sgt. Jeffery Scott said.

When Register retrieved the collection, one of the men pulled a gun and demanded money. A shot was fired as Register threw up his left hand, and his wedding ring deflected the bullet, police said.

“The bullet managed to go through two of his fingers without severing the bone,” said his wife, Darlene Register. “A part of the bullet broke off and is in his middle finger. The other part is in his neck, lodged in the muscle tissue. But it’s not life-threatening.”

She said she gives God all the credit.

Police were searching for the robbers, who Scott said “stole a substantial amount of cash.”
