Well, I was an iTunes lovin’ mofo ever since I got my new Macbook Pro. Key word there, “was” because after my lovely student worker Bob informed me of Mozilla’s new open-source music program, appropriately called Songbird I’m afraid I’ve been permanently swayed.
Sure, I’ll still have to use iTunes if I need to backup my ipod, download an app, or make a purchase. Whatever. The really great thing is that Songbird will automatically sync (but not copy) your iTunes library to its own sweetness; If I buy something on iTunes, it’ll show up with a simple mouse click. Bitchin’, huh? Also, it has ipod support built-in; which leads me to the other really great thing about it, it’s completely open and extendable. You can pull in lyrics, album art, concerts, and it even has a web browser. Can iTunes do that? uh…. don’t think so. Also, it has something stupidly called “Feathers” which are really skins, so you can even make it look exactly like iTunes if you want to.
In summary, a great program for a 1.0 version; definitely worth checking out if not making it your default music player. It’s free, a relatively small download, and is infinitely customizable. What’s not to like?
Download it NOW! (Mac, Linux, Windows, Magical Operating Systems)
Grade: B+ (would be an A if my keyboard shortcut keys were supported, but that should be fixed sooner or later…)
